Buffalo Sabres
It's been a long ride.
Is this the year?
Where was Boston's "Pasta" in the humiliating loss on Sunday?
And, the Bruins' #91 tough guy waited 57 minutes to show up?
Is it just me, or does the Bruin coach, Marco Sturm, look out of place behind the bench? He is a veteran 17-year NHL player who has had only one year with more than 50 minutes in the penalty box. But the Bruins are noted for push-back. They look tough. Their home uni is black. I expect the Bruin coach to project the same image of toughness. He doesn't. He's way too animated (with his hands) during his late-game timeouts -- he ain't Italian, he's German. Bruin fans must be wondering ... where's Terry O'Reilly when you need him?
Hey Sabres ... as they say, "don't forget to put your foot on their neck when they're down".
The late goal by Boston was an embarrassment to the Sabres fabulous goaltender. I hope every player apologized to him and will, next week, punish the Bruins with a similar end-game score.
Please don't have Josh Allen ring the bell, drop the ceremonial puck, or be in the building on Tuesday.
Note to Leaf Fans (me included) ... the Sabres have been a thorn in the side of the Leaf franchise since the team began with Buffalo's former Leaf GM/Coach, "Punch" Imlach. To mock his previous employer for being improperly dismissed, Imlach copied the Leaf uniform with the Sabres ... not the logo but the stripes on the socks and jerseys, and, since 1970, the two teams have met in 236 regular-season games. The curse of "Punch" seems to have worked. All time, the Sabres have won 126 games vs the Leafs 92 (with 18 games resulting in ties).
Go Sabres Go Owen Power! The Sabres are a great young team. Great article Mike T . JP
ReplyDeleteAnother excellent ‘column’, although I disagree about Marco Sturm. I do agree the Bruins do NOT have the ‘Terry O’Reilly’ types anymore. Randy McQuade, Zedeno, et al, are long gone! I lay this squarely on GM Don Sweeney and President Cam Neely! They have drafted poorly, without regard for size, toughness, and superb skaters!!! The Bruins ' offence and defence – especially in the playoffs - just don’t compete!! They have gone through a number of Coaches in recent years, and (while they had a 15-year sellout streak), they are one of the cheapest teams in the NHL.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction was Buffalo in 5. Something is definitely wrong but I don’t think it’s Marco!!
I have a soft spot for the Sabres as I shared season tickets with 4 friends from 1990 until 2002. I had to endure the likes of Mogilny, Lafontaine, Hawerchuk, Andreychuk, Audette, Satan and for almost all of that time, HASEK ! If you had 4 seasons tickets, you could buy 8 for the playoffs.
ReplyDelete1998 semifinals vs Washington, 6 rows behind the Buffalo net, $32/seat. Washington went on to play Detroit in the final. $100 got us seats 6 rows from the top. We were there in 99 for the infamous skate in the crease goal to give Dallas the Stanley Cup. Lots of fond memories besides the Maple Leaf dominance. I don’t know how you get over the border now in time for the games.
It was no problem back then. Only late once, we went to a home opener on a Thanksgiving weekend and were tied up with all the Canadians going shopping. Missed the first period.
Thanks for bringing the Sabres up Mike.
Cheers BK
Love reading your stories.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your thoughts. Love it when the the fans sang the Canadian National Anthem loud and clear. Much respect. The only answer from people whom love hockey. Mike Langevin
